There are many types of simulation and one can employ one or some of these to achieve the aims and learning objectives.
In-Suite Simulation
This refers to SBE being conducted within a purpose built simulation suite.

In-Situ Simulation
This refers to SBE which takes place within the team’s own environment, this may be a clinical area such as a ward or operating theatre, or even within the administration areas.

Role-Play
This refers to SBE that uses actors or staff physically playing a role within the scenario.
Latent Threat Testing
Often known as ‘stress testing’ This refers to SBE that is conducted to explore new processes that may be put into place within the Trust. Often when developing processes these can seem ideal on paper, however, when put into practice they may not work as planned. It is better to find this out before involving patients in need of care into the system. This can be ideal for new hospital builds.
Technical Skills
This refers to a skill that is required for the accomplishment of a specific task, such as inserting a chest drain or catheter.

Non-Technical Skills
This refers mainly to social, cognitive and personal skills that can assist with enhancing the way staff carry out specific tasks of skills as a team, often referred to as Human Factors.
