Design & Delivery in Health Care Simulation

Design & Delivery –  Faculty Course

The Simulation Design & Delivery course presents an opportunity to explore the principles of experiential learning theory within healthcare simulation, the process of constructing simulation scenarios, and the fundamentals of safe and effective debriefing. Beyond theoretical exploration, the course aims to advocate for the broader integration of simulation modalities, non-technical skills, and human factors in healthcare teaching, learning, and practice.

Simulation is increasingly recognised as a valuable tool for healthcare education due to its provision of a secure learning environment where students can enhance both clinical and non-technical skills under guided development. Our Simulation Faculty Program caters to healthcare professionals engaged in clinical roles, particularly those overseeing others engaged in simulation-based learning experiences, students, preceptorship, internationally educated staff or further education courses.

The Design and Delivery course is a two-day program designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively design and implement healthcare simulations, whether in simulation suites or within clinical environments. The curriculum covers various topics, including scenario design, roles within simulation activities, setup and close-down procedures, pre and post-simulation administration, as well as ethical considerations and adherence to simulation standards. Our primary focus is on cultivating proficient simulation practitioners and fostering a community of expert educators.

The course will cover topics such as:

  • Educational theory & adult learning
  • What makes simulation effective
  • Curriculum mapping & development of Learning Outcomes
  • Design and delivery of simulation & developing scenarios
  • Using a ‘pre-built’ scenario and exploring other scenario descriptors
  • Exploring the difference between in-situ, in-suite & external simulated activities
  • Examining roles within simulation activities
  • Introduction to debriefing
  • Setting up, running & close down of the simulation
  • Pre & post simulation administration
  • Simulation faculty collaboration
  • Simulation Code of Ethics & Simulation Standards
